This morning we found a blackbird in the garden. He was dead. I don't know what happened. Did he crash into the window? Did our dog catch him in a low flight? Yes she thinks she is a cat. Was he just old?
The body was still warm and the beauty of that little bird filled me with tremendous sadness.
Lying so still while a few moments before, flying high and fast, he enjoyed total freedom.
I wanted to capture the perfection and the beauty of this little creature and honour it.
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
Black bird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
all your life
you were only waiting for this moment to be free
Blackbird fly, Blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night.
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

There is little as sad as dead birds; maybe it's because they fall to the ground. They should be allowed to whirl around where we can't reach them. It's not like I will be pulled off the ground and sent to the skies when I die...

And you've captured that beauty so well. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteLast year, a robin hit my back door/window... and it lay right outside the door on my deck.. and so I waited and watched and waited.. and watched it take its last breath.. sometimes they do recover and fly off.. and then I saw another robin.. nearby.. standing my my deck.. also watching and waiting.. so I was doubly sad. love the words to the song.. one of my favorites.
